IDEN 2nd XI v SEAFORD 3rd XI (09/08/08)
Seaford made the long journey to Iden with 7 changes to last weeks tea. With rain starting to fall the toss was to prove important, yet again returning captain Richard Cummins called wrong and Iden choose to bowl. Both teams were eager to get a game in so the innings started in steady rain and soon the first wicket fell to the bowling of Rifle (3-45) with Anderson caught behind.
After a short break as the rain increased Pete Grey (27) started to play some shots including an all run 4!. Rhys Cummins was then next out to a good ball from Rifle which nipped back. With the score advanced to 53 Grey was then out playing on to a wide one from Rifle. With the loss of young Dean Cooper it bought together the last two recognized batsman of Messrs Cummins & Cooper seniors. They played cautiously until Cummins (21) mistimed his shot and was caught, having put on 50 with 'Coops'. Coops then played some of his trade mark leg-side shots until being bowled by E.Avanns (3-30) for 55. He had been well supported by Mitch Ellingham (6) who although not scoring many runs played his part in a useful partnership.
The innings finished with Seaford losing their last 3 wkts to end on 146, not a bad total with only 4 players over 14.
As the rain became a bit more patchy the Iden reply began, with Seaford only having two recognized bowlers in Johnny Anderson & Under 14 Rhys Cummins. It was they that opened the attack. Anderson got his reward for a good opening spell with the wicket of G.Bourn (18) with the score on 23. At the end of his 7 over spell he was unlucky to have only the 1 wicket.
With Rhys keeping one end going, he took his first wicket that of Avann (11), D.Cooper bowled a couple of good overs before the sight never seen before in a league game of the skipper bowling himself!!.This proved an interesting spell with him having R. Cloute (36) dropped before getting J.White (39) caught & bowled for his first league wicket.
Anderson was then bought back on and had Rifle brilliantly caught by Mitch Ellingham from a shot that appeared never to be coming down! With Cummins having Cloute caught as well Seaford had got themselves back into the game. Anderson (3-46) who was still bowling with good pace then cleaned bowled G.Avann knowing his side were just 2 wickets for a win. Iden captain W.Downs (31no) had other ideas and saw his side home with some lusty blows to keep his side well on course for promotion.
Seaford's young & inexperienced side did themselves proud with some excellent fielding backing up their bowlers. Rhys Cummins toiled away for 20 overs taking 2-67 and in partnership with Anderson made the batsman work hard for their runs. The match was played in the spirit of the game with both sides making light of the conditions.
