DEADLY DRURY DISMANTLES HELLINGLY

HELLINGLY 2nd XI v SEAFORD 2nd XI (28/06/08)

Seaford 2nd XI traveled to high flying Hellingly on Saturday in what was to prove an easier task that it looked on paper.

Skipper Andy Pulford won the toss and had no hesitation in inserting Hellingly on what looked like a bowlers paradise. The decision to bowl soon started to reap rewards with Matt Drury having opener George Hook caught by Pulford in his second over. Some tight bowling at the other end by Chris Towner enabled  Seaford to build pressure which Drury exploited by dismissing the next four batsmen for a total of 4 runs with a fine example of enigmatic briskish medium left arm bowling, drawing some indecision leading to 3 being bowled and one trapped LBW.

Towner soon made way for Paddy Smith after bowling very impressively without reward to end with 27 runs from his 7 overs. The ever dependable Smith soon accounted for the other opener Stevens (40) who skied another catch to the back peddling Pulford at mid off. By now Hellingly were hanging on at 56 for 6. By the time Aaron Yeomans bowled Hicks (0) Hellingly were staring down the barrel and it was only skipper Vidler (28) who dragged them passed 100. Smith finishing the innings by having Vidler caught in the covers by Rob Snow. Smith finished with the fine figures of 3 for 27 from his 13 overs including 7 maidens although it was Drury's day as he bowled 14 overs unchanged to finish with 5 wickets for 33 runs also including 7 maidens.

Seaford's openers set about chasing the 105 impressively as Jacob Miles and John Reynolds laced the ball to the boundary with some mercurial cricket shots. Only 9 overs had passed and Seaford were already well on their way with 60 on the board when they lost Miles (35) who was caught on the short leg side boundary. This bought Dan Gorringe to the crease who, along with Miles, had faced Lashings All Stars the day before whilst playing for their school so Hellingly's bowling was never really going to challenge them. Reynolds (38) and Gorringe (29) continued the fine scoring rate and by the time both were dismissed in the space of an over the job was as good as done and it was a mere formality when Rob Snow smashed the winning runs.

Afterwards Drury stated " It was nice to get back amongst the wickets after the last couple of weeks and I hope I can carry on my good form to the end of the season."
